Masai Mara

Masai Mara, a premier wildlife reserve in southwestern Kenya, forms the northern continuation of the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania. Established as a national reserve in 1961, it has since become one of Africa’s most famous conservation areas. The origin of the name 'Mara' comes from the Maa language of the Maasai people, meaning 'spotted,' a reference to the scattered acacia trees and scrub dotting the vast savannah. The cultural presence of the Maasai community—who have lived in the region for centuries—is strongly reflected in the reserve’s traditions, landscapes, and surrounding settlements. Renowned for its exceptional wildlife populations and the annual Great Migration of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, the Masai Mara remains a symbol of Kenya’s natural heritage. The nearest major town is Narok.
